This Week I Learnt About Pockets

I have to say a huge THANK YOU to PK as her comment on one of my posts led me on a search for the history of women's pockets.

I found some articles, and now I'm suitably annoyed at the inequality of pocket-availability and accessibility.

(Also, I think it's built into our DNA - when I find something that has functional pockets, I'm totally thrilled! Also BIKSS has said to me that whenever I get a new piece of clothing, I'll immediately point out the pockets if it has them! And I'm not the only one who does that - my friends will point out pockets in new outfits too!)

Here are some links if you would like to read a bit more on the subject.

The Bewildering and Sexist History of Women’s Pockets

"As women’s fashion evolved in the 1790s, the pocket slowly began to disappear as more figure hugging dresses came in fashion. Women had to revert to having their ‘pockets’ on show to the world, opting for small decorative bags, called reticules, that could scarcely fit a hankie and a coin. This was essentially an embodiment of the fact that women had next to no access to money or property, therefore wouldn’t need a functional pocket."

The Ridiculous Reason Most Women's Clothes Don't Have Real Pockets

(Includes an audio of the podcast episode Where the f*** are the pockets on women's clothing? on Stuff Mom Never Told You)

"Some say it was a way to keep women powerless. If they had no way to secretly carry items around, it would be harder for them to travel independently or conduct clandestine affairs."

How society decided that women can't have pockets

"Men were much more likely to lock their keys in the car, but nearly half of all women reported that they often didn’t even know where their keys were.

But it’s not women’s fault. It’s the fault of the psychopathic sadists in charge of making their clothes."

(If you prefer to watch / listen to that article instead of reading it, there's a Youtube video on that page or you can click on this link - Why women's clothes should have pockets)

"Writing for The Spectator in 2011, Paul Johnson offers a witty, thumbnail history of the sartorial convention of the pocket, and he caps his piece with a 1954 Christian Dior bon mot: "Men have pockets to keep things in, women for decoration."

Tease apart that quote and you get a fairly essentialist view of gender roles as they play out in clothing. Men’s dress is designed for utility; women’s dress is designed for beauty. It’s not a giant leap to see how pockets, or the lack thereof, reinforce sexist ideas of gender. Men are busy doing things; women are busy being looked at. Who needs pockets?"

(Scroll all the way to the end of the page for the video version... )

So, ladies, let me know what you think about the whole pocket - no pocket - faux pocket situation.

I would love to hear your comments on this topic. Did you know there was such a thing? Were you aware of the political / sexist implications? Are you a fan of pockets? Is it a make-or-break for you?

Let me know down below!

  1. Hi Fondles,

Wow, interesting, I did not know this.

Pockets aren't a deal breaker for me, although I do like having them, mainly in pants. Having said that though, I tend to use a bag rather than utilise pockets as I don't like the feeling of being weighted down by full pockets.

    1. i use a bag for the big things, but I do like a pocket for my lighter / cigs and random things like a quick tissue or, these days, somewhere to stuff my mask when i'm eating.

  2. You KNOW I LOVE irony, so when a great piece with a lot to discuss deals primarily with sexist exclusion, and it's obvious there's some resentment for how women have been cruelly denied access to the wonderful world of pockets, it's kind of interesting to see it end with: "So, ladies, let me know what you think about the whole pocket - no pocket - faux pocket situation." LOL

Too bad too, because given my years as a fashion and home retailer and even running a women's dept, for a while, I actually would have liked to respond to this one, but I guess I'll just keep my unwelcome "man-opinion" in my pocket. LOL ;-)

Good post though, and lots of research too!

  3. I can remember growing up being told that pockets were ugly in women's clothing.. that they made your hips look bigger and were not the least bit feminine AND OH MY GOD should a coat have pockets - you didn't dare put anything in it - especially your hands!!

The research you did makes sense to me... women didn't own anything - everything they had came from the males in their lives... so why would they need pockets?!

makes my blood boil but hey! it was what it was right?? I'm just very glad to have pockets in my clothes now! and to hell with how big they make my hips look LOL

    1. i don't think anyone ever discussed pockets with me as i was growing up but yeah, i'm not so picky about how an extra pocket looks if it means i have a space for keys/ mints / ciggies.

  4. I've been mad about this for years! And I refuse to own an article of clothing to be worn below the waist unless it has full pockets, dresses included - not that I have many dresses. I have, on occasion, brought men's pants to wear. They are usually slightly tight in the butt (a good thing according to Nick) and have WONDERFUL pockets. Lets keep up the good fight on this!

    1. HAHA. I'm not sure about where or how to fight this but I'm definitely a fan of the pocket-on-my-pants movement. I don't mind fitting dresses not having pockets, or certain style of skirts, depending on the silhouette, but there are some cuts/styles that wouldn't be hurt by adding a pocket or two and if I expect there to be pockets (especially on denim bottoms including skirts) then I won't buy them if they're pocket-less.

  5. No pockets = powerless women. That is my humorous takeaway from your post today. Talk about getting revenge with power purses. Thanks for the controversial post today. (Only two more letters to go!) Thank you for visiting my site today.

    1. The ultimate revenge purse must be the oversized tote! I’m sure many women will agree that it’s one of the best bags ever invented.

  6. This is a topic that I have never thought about before. But now I see your point. This definitely deserves a protest song, for the pocket campaigners

    1. I can just see it. Women with their hands stuck firmly into sewn on pockets on the front of their outfits marching along the street!
